The Future Of Work - Are Your Skills Up To Date.png

Technological advancement especially in the areas of automation and artificial intelligence has changed the working landscape. To keep up with changing job requirements, what skills are necessary for the future of work? Human-centric skills tend to pop up the most on lists of future-proof job skills. Similar to our previous article regarding future-proof jobs, these skills are also common among that particular list of careers. Although there are many different skills; skills that set human power apart from artificial labor include creative thinking, communication, and advanced problem-solving are the most common across different expert studies.

Creative Thinking

Alison Doyle of The Balance splits creative thinking into five categories: analysis, open-mindedness, problem-solving, organization, and communication. Analytical thinking is required during the creative process as each potential situation at work needs to be first understood, then creative solutions can be generated. Closing oneself off to new ideas can also prevent you from getting ahead in today’s workplace. Therefore, open-mindedness and flexibility is an attractive trait to many employers. While being creative is extremely important, this can lead to a lack of organization, so it is imperative to organize creative ideas by using a set creative process that can be used repeatedly to generate advantageous results. Communication and problem-solving skills will be described in more detail below.

Communication

Effective communication continues to be a trait that cannot be automated. Just think about how difficult it can be sometimes to use voice commands on even the most sophisticated voice assistants such as Siri or Alexa. Communication for advanced concepts cannot be replicated by a computer. For example: imagine explaining the intricacies of accredited investor verification with an algorithm. Talking does not necessarily constitute effective communication as non-verbal communication takes up the bulk of it. Active listening also plays a great role in a good conversation. All together learning to communicate more effectively and efficiently can lead to more connections and respect securing your job safety and job prospects.

Advanced Problem-Solving

Do not worry, we are not talking about high-level math when we say “advanced problem-solving”. Advanced problem-solving means navigating complex situations and coming up with solutions. The human brain is one of the best computers, so utilizing it to its full potential is a great skill with fantastic longevity. Humans are great multi-taskers and logicians, so seeking roles that engage your problem-solving skills and adding those skills to your resume is great. In practice, great problem-solving skills are used to boost team synergy, create new products and ideas, and help your chosen career or company flourish.

Each individual should not feel that they need to be perfect at all these skills or a computer will take their job. Learning to incorporate a little bit of each of these skills can go a long way on its own. Going back to school or engaging in an extended skill program can help a professional keep up with changing trends.

Amidst the march of automation, the realm of human emotions remains a complex and nuanced domain that defies replication. Empathy, often described as the ability to understand and share the feelings of others, is a fundamental attribute that underpins harmonious interpersonal relationships and effective collaboration. Likewise, emotional intelligence, encompassing self-awareness, self-regulation, motivation, empathy, and social skills, play a pivotal role in navigating intricate social dynamics within the workplace. These uniquely human traits empower individuals to connect on a profound level, resolve conflicts, and foster an environment of inclusivity and psychological safety. While machines can process data and algorithms, they lack the innate ability to comprehend and respond to human emotions in an authentic and empathetic manner. As the future of work unfolds, harnessing the power of empathy and emotional intelligence will be a hallmark of successful individuals who stand as pillars of cohesive and thriving professional communities.

As we navigate the uncharted territories of an increasingly automated world, it is evident that the fusion of technological prowess with distinctly human skills is the compass guiding individuals toward career longevity and fulfillment. While creative thinking, communication, advanced problem-solving, adaptive learning, and empathy constitute a formidable toolkit, the value of each skill is magnified when integrated harmoniously. Embracing these human-centric competencies not only safeguards against job displacement but also positions individuals to shape the future workforce, where the coalescence of human ingenuity and technological innovation will drive progress beyond the limits of imagination.
